My Weber Spirit E310 still had a useful cooking job to do when its base became the problem. In my August 2026 notes, I described a grill that cooked well, with a frame that had developed substantial rust. I wanted to keep using the grill, and I also wanted to learn how to weld.
The problem was in the frame
I usually kept a cover on the grill, but water had still collected around the base. The deterioration underneath was a different issue from the parts I used to cook. I had already replaced wear items, including grates and heat diffusers, while continuing to get a great deal of use from the grill.
A repair need becomes a learning project
The idea of learning to weld appeared in my May notes and returned in August. There was a practical reason to consider it: most of the grill still worked well, and I did not want to replace the whole thing simply because its base needed attention.
By September, I was still talking about the rusted base, the platform underneath it and cleaning up the shelves. The repair remained something I wanted to work through.
Keeping the project in view
The grill remained useful while its frame raised a harder question about its future. Keeping it working and learning a hands-on skill had become connected goals.
Cooking value and repair value
The Weber story contains two judgments that deserve to stay separate. I still valued the cooking equipment, while the rusted base made its future less straightforward. Replacing grates or heat diffusers had kept familiar wear parts in service. A frame problem raised a different question about the structure supporting the whole appliance.
The attraction of learning to weld was real in the notes, but the idea is not evidence that welding was the right repair for this frame. A sensible next account would begin with an assessment of what remained sound, what replacement options existed and whether a repair was practical. Only then could the learning project be weighed against keeping the grill in use. Until that assessment and result are recorded, this remains a story about a useful machine and an unresolved repair decision.
