Planet Word: a morning with language

A Washington visit among projected city scenes, a wall of words and a gallery about persuasion.

On December 22, 2025, part of our Washington day was spent at Planet Word. My photographs move between a wall crowded with words, a room transformed by projected images and a gallery about persuasion.

A gallery about getting our attention

The I’m Sold! heading is hard to miss. Beneath it, the gallery names its subject directly: techniques of persuasion. The displays bring advertising and the choice of words into the space of a museum visit.

That subject has a connection to my working life. A commercial conversation depends on explaining something clearly, but language can also be used to distract or push past what someone actually needs to know. A room devoted to persuasion makes that distinction a subject to look at rather than simply a technique to use.

Words as the room around you

The wall of words has a different effect from a page. Some words project far into the room; others form a much denser background. Colored light falls across the letters. The whole surface becomes something to look over before it becomes something to read closely.

In another room, projected pictures change the walls, with descriptive words displayed near the floor. A city scene, broad patches of color and the language used to describe them share the same view.

One part of a Washington day

Later photographs from the day turn to a treaty under glass and then to the Mall after dark. Planet Word belongs alongside those stops while remaining a different experience: language presented through scale, light, images and the choices that make a message persuasive.

Exhibit identification is corroborated by Planet Word’s museum map. The account and photographs are from the December 2025 visit.
